Right Before Your Eyes 1953 WEWS
Rare 20 minute Documentary about the early history of Cleveland and Northeast Ohio Television from 1947-The time of this broadcast. First televised October 24, 1953 at 7PM and in a repeat December 16, 1953 at 10:30PM on WEWS-TV 5 Cleveland. Unique about this program is that they show all on the air stations with local clips from Youngstown, Cleveland, Ashtabula and Akron. Also shown are plans for future UHF stations most of which never came to pass.

      there are several documentaries that already cover all that. this is strictly about shows for children, rather than shows that aired late at night. kinda hard to lump ghoulardi in with miss barbara from romper room.

    I'm a little surprised you did not mention the most famous incident in Cleveland live TV , when Barnaby had his on-air melt-down. I don't remember much of it, but: "...And there's no goddamned bird in that cage!" Maybe you didn't want to besmirch his memory, but we are all in our 60's or 70's now, so we can take a little reality ;)

    Well this brings back a lot of memories... I watched these shows in the early to late sixties. My mom didn't like me watching the Three Stooges on the Captain Penny show, so I'd watch them until I heard my mom coming downstairs. Then I'd switch to the afternoon movie in channel 3. And switch it back to the Three Stooges when she went back upstairs. Oh, and I have at CD and video of Robert Farnon's "La Claire Fontaine", the Barnaby theme. I still choke up a bit when I hear it...

    I had as a kid a Ghoulardi sweatshirt. It was black but his outline was in white. And I always wondered about Superhost. I don’t know if it was make up or a naturally red nose but it made me think he was a drinker. But I was kid. I can be forgiven.

    In high school my class took a trip to the Big Chuck Lil John show. We were the audience of a Mary Hartsky skit. But we never saw the skit. We’d just hold up signs and ai had to tell the girl behind home her sign was upside down. Chuck wasn’t exactly nice. Never saw Lil John. I used to watch Big Chuck and Lil John. Not too impressed. I liked The Ghoul and hen he passed away.

    Jean Carroll. Watched his talent show every Sunday at 11am. But in the 60’s he looked obviously much older. I was fascinated by his production numbers. A couple times I watched Polka Varieties. Couldn’t understand the concept of all these people slow dancing. Mom had taught me how to Polka in the living room. I also remember Academic Challenge so I could get smart. I can’t remember the host’s name but he took over Gene Carroll’s show,

      @@lisanidog8178 Polka Varieties was a way to get our elders out of the house, get dressed up and dance! Rewarded when Sunday came around and the grandkids could share grama's big moment watching her on TV! Great memories and a great Sunday family line up.

    55:17 I mean, to be fair, why wouldn't kids ignore it? WJW hadn't aired a single piece of regularly scheduled kids programming since switching from a CBS to a FOX affiliate in 1994.

    My dad, Walt Kay, was the host of a short lived kids show called Cousin Kay's Corner. I heard he quit the show after hearing the television station wanted to broadcast a show covering horse racing results. He didn't agree with their time slot being on after a kids program.

    I adored Captain Penny. He was my very first celebrity crush at 5 years old. He made a personal appearance at Giant Tiger on Miles Rd. when it first opened. My brother and I were pleasantly surprised when our parents took us to meet him. Unfortunately, I lost my autographed photo of him decades ago. So sad he passed so young. I loved the memories your video stirred up. Thank You!
